Maya's Two Minutes to Make a Difference Reflection

Group Members -
Emily P, Breanna M, Ana L, Maya L. 8-73

2. The changes we made between the first and final cut of my movie were the pictures, the way we organized it, and the text. We needed to know which pictures were going in, and which pictures shouldn't be in the video. We needed to organize the slides, and put voice into it. We also needed to fix our text, and to make sure our voice is clear. Lastly, we had to fix the interview, so it wouldn't be long. I think the student comments helped us, because we probably would have gotten a low mark, and we needed to improve of what we missed in the video.

3. Our expert for our video was D'Arcy from D'Arcy's Animal Rescue Center. We emailed him, and asking if they could book us to interview about animal cruelty and take pictures. He replied back a day after saying that he was free at some specific time and day. I learned from my expert that animal cruelty is an important issue, and that cats are being taken in every single day to his animal center.

4. My greatest success in this video process was finding the expert because, I didn't think that experts for animal cruelty would have time for us, but I was in the Philippines while my group talked to two more experts. The skills that I will take with me and use in the future for a project like this is to always takes notes so I can memorize all the important information I would need for my project.

5. The thing that frustrated me the most during the movie process would have to be taking time to find the materials and figuring out what information and pictures to use in our video because, we had to know which information and pictures to use that would make the audience go out to make a cause after watching our project. The strategies that we used were to use what was really important, what everyone would like to know about animal cruelty, and why we should prevent it from happening.

6. The 2 Minutes project is important to Grade 8 students because, we are getting more mature and we should know what is happening in the world right at this moment. Sometimes, we think about ourselves than other people or other animals. We should all be treated equally and nobody or any animal should be harmed at all. Especially, if they're innocent.

7. In the future, I will make a difference by donating money to the animal shelters. My project made me realize that animals are being abused for all the wrong reasons and we should care for them, like we do for our family and friends.

Maya's Algebra Post

Algebra - Writing mathematical phrases using letters to show numbers.
Variable - A letter that represents a number in an equation or expression. eg. x, n, t.
Constant
- The integer in an algebraic equation or expression.

Expression - A pattern with many possible answers.
Equation - With only one possible answer.

How to solve a one step equation:
1. Isolate the variable.
2. Cancel the constant using a zero pair.
3.
Balance the equation. What you do on one side, do t
o the other.
4. Verif
y.

Solving with algebra tiles.

How to do two step equations:
1. Isolate the variable.
2. Cancel the constant.

3. Balance.
4. Simplify the variable.
5. Balance.
6. Verify.

Here are two videos that will help you understand one step and two step equations.

Term 2 Reflection

This term, I got a higher mark. I did really well on the quizzes. Volume was really easy for me, and I understood it really quick. The thing that I struggled on is surface area because it was difficult for me to understand, and somehow I struggled on tests because I usually don’t show my work. I’ll try to do my best for next term by studying more, and showing my work, asking more questions to my teacher, commenting on the blogs more, and explaining more on my blog posts, participate in class more, and do more work in my homework book. In term 2, we learned about converting fractions into percents, surface area, and finding the volume to a rectangular prism, triangular prism, and cylinder. We also learned formulas like LxW and BxH/2. I’m hoping I can improve and focus more on term 3 and I hope I don’t slack as much as I did in term 2.

I'm having a hard time trying to put up my audioboo. The sound doesn't work.

Maya's Great Book of Integers

Chapter 1 - Grade 7 Integer Review

Integers
- Number lines
- Integer chips
- Zero pair

- Positive and negatives ( + and - )
- "When subtracting something that isn't there, use a zero pair."

-6 - (-4) = -2
-10 + 6 = -4
14 - (-3) = 17
-3 - (-7) = 4
-3 - 7 = 10
3 -7 = 4
3 +7 = 10
-3 +7 = 4

Chapter 2 - Multiplying Integers

(+2) x (+3) = 6
(+2) x (-3) = -6
(-2) x (+3) = -6
(-2) x (-3) = 6

Chapter 3 - Dividing Integers

When you have an off number of negativ e signs in a division question, the quotient is negative.
If you have no negative or even number of negative signs in a division question, the quotient is positive.

Here is an example from our notes:

6 / 2 = 3
-6 / (-2) = 3

Quotative Division or sharing your total with groups.

Here is an example of what we did in class:

Chapter 4
- Order of Operations with Integers

(+5) x (-3) + (-6)/ (+3)

First, you make a box around (+5) x (-3) so it's 5 groups of negative 3.

That would equal -15.
Then, you put a box around (-6) / (+3)
How many groups of positive 3 would be in negative 6?
Negative 2.
So, -15 + -2 = -17.

Volume

The linear measurement is 25cm

.
1ml = 1cm2

Volume
Area of the base x he
ight

Base (of a prism or cylinder)
- Any face of a prism that shows the named shape of the prism.
- The base of a rectangular prism is any face.
- The base of a triangular prism is a triangular face.
- The base of a cylinder is a circular face.

Height (of a prism or cylinder)
- The perpendicular distance between the two bases of a prism or cylinder.

Area of base x h
bxh/2 . h2
6x10/2 = 30cm2
30cm2 . 5cm = 150cm3

Area of base x h
3.14 . r . r x h
3.14 . 5 . 5 = 78.5cm2
d/2 = r
10/2 = r
78.5cm2 . 10cm = 785cm2
Here is a link to help you understand better about volumes.

7.3
A) V = pi x r x r x h
V = (3.14 x 5 x 5) x 23
V = 78.5cm2 x 23cm
V = 1805. 5 cm3
B) V = pi x r x r x h
V = (3.14 x 14 x 14) x 12
V = 615.44 x 12cm
V = 7385.28 cm3
C) V = pi x r x r x h
V = (3.14 x 0.5 x 0.5) x 1.5
V = 0.375m x 1.5
V = 1.1775

Final Percent Post

Percents
1. This chapter, we learned about percent. Percent means out of 100. Percents can be converted into fractions and/or decimals.
Example: 45% - 45/100 or 0.45

Representing Percents
> Percents can be represented by using hundred grids. Example: 50% or 1/2

Fractions, Decimals, Percents
> Percents can be represented as a fraction or a decimal. Example: 50% ; 50/100 ; 0.5

Percent of a Number
> You can find percent of numbers by using mental math strategies. They are halving, doubling, a dividing by 10. Example: 50% of 1000 is 500
> Or you can convert the percent to a decimal and then multiplying it by the number.

Combining Percents
> Combine percents by adding to solve the problems. Example: 5% + 7% =12%

Maya's Pay It Forward

Group members: Me, Ana Lopena, Breanna Machado, Hazel Turdanes, and Colleen Landicho.

Part 1.
Pay It Forward is when you kindly help someone without them doing something in return, but they have to pay it forward to other people. The movie, Pay It Forward was about a boy named Trevor who has an alcoholic mom. His social studies teacher, Mr. Simonet gives his class an assignment to think of how to make the world a better place. Trevor helped 3 people. He first helped a homeless person, then he helped the second person to stop getting bullied. The third task he did was trying to get his mom and Mr. Simonet to date. Sadly, in the end, Trevor dies while trying to save his friend from getting beat up by bullies. He died by getting stabbed with a knife.

Part 2.
My Pay It Forward act of kindess was going to Polo Park and handing out candy canes out to people. We chose this activity because, since it's almost Christmas, it doesn't hurt to give out candy canes to people while they're Christmas shopping and, it's also fun. When we went to Polo Park, we immediantly started handing out candy canes. We did our act of kindness after school, December 17, 2010.

Part 3.
My act of kindess went really well. Once we went there, we all went to donate our toys at a hamper, and that's when people from 102.3 Clear FM talked to us, and mentioned us on the radio. Alot of people were thrilled to be getting a candy cane, but some people refused. At first, I felt really nervous because of rejection, but after a few minutes, it wasn't so bad after all. When we handed our candy canes to people, they were really happy. We asked them to Pay It Forward at the end.

Part 4.
It's important to "Pay it forward" because it can make the world a better place is if it's keep passed on, and it will have a huge impact on amount of people. I hope that, my act of kindness made a difference to them because maybe they're having a bad day, and we made their day by giving them candy canes and being so kind to them.

Remember to Pay It Forward!

Maya's Math Profile

Hi, my name is Maya. I am a grade 8 math student. If anyone asked me if I liked math, I would say no because it's not my strongest subject and I always have a hard time on it. The best thing that I have ever done is math was in grade four when the teacher would take out que cards. She would ask us a question, and when we got the question right she would give us a treat.

The best thing I did last year in math was probably doing the measures of central tendency. It's really easy learning about mean, median, mode, range and outlier. At first, I didn't get it but then I kept working on it. Then, it became easy and it was actually pretty interesting. The unit that I thought was really hard was doing algebra. I thought it was really confusing and to this day, I still think it's confusing. This year, I will try to study more and get my grades higher.

This year in grade 8, I want to become a better student by writing notes down so I can remember stuff easily for a test/quiz. I also want to study more so I can get high marks that I've always wanted. Plus, I would like to learn more about algebra since it has always been a struggle for me since last year.

My favorite post that I have done last year was Integers. Even though the post wasn't long enough, I still enjoyed making it. Maybe if I could, I would have done a little better to improve. I hope that this year, I will work harder on blogging. Doing the blog also helped me because of all the comments. Their opinion meant alot to see what I did best at what I could have done to make the blog much better. Blogging also helped me to be a better math student because I would always reviewed them in my free time and eventually, I remembered what I needed to learn.
