Hazel's 2 Minutes to Make a Difference Reflection

1.
Google Doc:

Version 1:

Final Draft:

2. Some changes we made to the first draft was we added more pictures and we shortened the time length of some slides. Another change we made was, we put where the money we raised was donated to. We also made some spelling and grammar changes.

3. Rebecca Irving is the name of our expert. She is from MCIC, Manitoba Council for International Cooperation. I sent her an email talking about our 2 minutes project. Then we asked her information about their organization and what they do to help. She mentioned fair trade. After, we had an interview with her and we learned a lot from it. Some information she gave us were: "when children are forced to work they can't go to school. Physically and mental effects being that they worked under very hazardous and dangerous conditions." She also defined what child labour is "forced labour under hazardous conditions where they don't have a voice and they don't have any of the comforts and amenities we would like to think a child has." Lastly, she told us about Fair Trade "Made under conditions and with people that are not children, and that they had good working conditions and they were safe. If they felt unsafe their voice was actually heard."

5. I think our greatest success in this movie is the expert part and the music. We had a lot of evidence when it came to the interview and we changed the mood of the music when it came to the making a difference part. The skills I will take with me is gathering information and pictures then turning it into a movie. Another thing would be adding music and other audio to a video/movie.

6. What frustrated me during the movie making process was putting the information together with a clear message, to make a difference! We didn't have enough pictures at first so had to search for more. At first, I was worried that the length of the video would be too short but it was okay in the end.

7. The 2 Minutes project is important to Grade 8 Students because it gives us a chance to show that we care. It got us to think outside the box and come up with a way to make a difference. This project also teaches a lesson, even the simplest actions can make a huge difference in another person's life.

8. I will make a difference in the future by paying more attention to what is happening in the world and find ways to make a difference. I will also donate food, clothing and money to a charity in the future.

Final Percent Post

Percent means out of one hundred. It's also known as hundredths. It can be represented by decimals and fractions.
Representing Percents
You can represent percents by showing it on a hundred grid.
Fractions, Decimals, Percents
Percents can be written as decimals, and fractions.
Percent of a Number
To find a percent of a number, you can use mental math strategies such as, halving, doubling, and dividing by 10. Another way is to write the percent as a decimal and multiply it by the number.

I didn't have a scribe post for percents.

Hazel's Pay it Forward

Part 1
"Pay it Forward" is a movie about an eleven year old boy named Trevor, he comes from a troubled home. At school, Trevor and his class are introduced to Mr. Simonet, the new Social Studies teacher. Mr. Simonet gives the class an assignment: To come up with an idea on how to make the world a better place, then put it into action. This is when Trevor came up with the idea of "Pay it Forward" He would help three people and then ask them to Pay it Forward to three more people, each. So that makes nine and it keeps going and forms a chain. On Trevor's first act of kindness, he brings a homeless man named Jerry into his home and helps him find a job. Next, he tries to set up Mr. Simonet and his mom Arlene. Lastly, he tries to rescue his friend from the bullies at school. He gets stabbed by one of the bullies and dies in the end.

Part 2
To pay it forward my group (Maya, Ana, Colleen, and Breanna) and I donated toys to a local toy drive sponsored by 102.3 clear FM and gave out candy canes. We donated toys because there are some children out there who don't get much for Christmas. Then we walked around Polo Park and handed out candy canes to strangers. That was really fun, and we were pretty good at it too. We did our acts of kindness on Friday, December, 17, 2010.

Part 3
Our acts of kindness went really well. When we donated the toys, a guy from 102.3 clear FM asked us if we wanted to enter a contest to win a trip to Mexico. We told him "No thank you, we are from Sargent Park and all we're doing is Paying it Forward". After that, he told us to follow him and he talked to someone, then he told us " You girls will be mentioned on the radio, I like what you are doing, thank you". We replied with "You're welcome and Pay It Forward". When we were handing out candy canes, we did pretty good. We saw lots of smiles, and made someone's day. There were also some people who didn't want one and people who thought we wanted something in return.

Part 4
The idea of Pay It Forward is important because it teaches people that one person or a simple act of kindness can make a big difference towards making the world a better place.
I really hope that my acts of kindness made a difference.

Hazel's Pythagorean Relationship Scribe Post

Key Ideas

The Pythagorean relationship can be used to determine the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle when the lengths of two legs are known.

The Pythagorean relationship can be used to determine the leg length of a right triangle when the lengths of the hypotenuse and the other leg are known.

1. Jack must determine the missing side of a triangle. He decides to draw it and then measure it,as shown. Do you agree with the method that Jack is using? Explain.

Answer: No, I don't agree with the method that Jack is using because it would take too much work. It would be easier if he just used the formula: a²+b²=c² then √c²=c (hypotenuse).

2. Kira calculated the missing side length of the right triangle.
Is Kira correct? If she is correct, explain how you know. If she is incorrect, explain the correct method.
Answer: Kira is incorrect. She should've used the formula b²=c²-a² or in this case, y²=x²-w².

3.Determine the length of the hypotenuse.

4.What is the length of each hypotenuse? Give your answer to the nearest tenth of a centimetre.

Right Triangles and Pythagorean Theorem

1) Explain a²+b²=c²

a²+b²=c²
4²+3²=c²
16+9=c²
25=c²
In this triangle, a²=4 cm², b²=3cm². To figure out the hypotenuse you use the formula a²+b²=c². After you figure out what c² equals (25), you find the square root.√25 = 5. So the hypotenuse is 5.
2) Use a second grid to create a²+b²=c²
3) Make the triangle c² to c... How?
To make the triangle c² to c you find the square root of the answer for c².

Hazel's Math Profile

Hello, my name is Hazel Turdanes. I am a math student in grade 8. If someone asked me "Do you like math?" I would say yes, I do like math. Math has always been one of my strongest subjects in school. For me, the best thing I ever did in math was blogging. It helped me become more organized. I liked blogging because I learned how to do new things on the computer and I helped my classmates.

Last year in grade 7 the best unit that I studied was The Order of Operations. I think I did well in this unit because it was easy, you just have to remember what BEDMAS stands for. Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction. The unit that made me struggle was Transformations. I had trouble with rotating the shapes and finding out the new coordinates. This year, I could ask more questions and use my notes or homework book so that I don't struggle so much.

Now that I am in grade 8, I will be more organized and I will study for all of my tests and quizzes. I will also do my homework and hand it in on time to be a successful math student. This year I want to learn more about Algebraic Equations and I also want to be prepared for grade 9.

I was a blogger last year. My favorite post that I created was the blog about Subtracting Fractions With Unlike Denominators. I liked this post because it had color, pictures, and a video. Blogging has helped me become a better student in many ways. It helped me become more organized with my notes, I learned new things, and I listened more attentively in class. This year I want to continue making scribe posts, and I also want to make videos about math.
