Anna Gomez's Algebra Post

Algebra

Algebra- Writing mathematical phrases using letters to represent numbers
eg. n+3 = 143x = 18

Variable- a letter that represents a number in an equation or expression
eg. n+11=20 (can be n, x, p, z, or any letter)

Constant- the integer in an algebraic expression or equation
eg. 18+n =35

Expression- Pattern (many answers)
eg. 5n

Equation- Only has one answer and an equal (=) sign
eg. 5n=20

Algebra Tiles

Solving a One Step Equation

With and Without tiles

1st: Isolate the variable
2nd: Cancel the constant using zero pair
3rd: Balance (do the same thing to the other side)
4th: Verify to check

Solving a Two step equation

With and without tiles.

1st: Isolate the variable
2nd Cancel the constant
3rd:
Balance
4th: Simplify the variable
5th:Balance
6th: Verify

Correction: those X's are all positive x's. I forgot to color it in.

Anna's Surface Area

Finding the surface area of Rectangular Prism and Triangular Prism.

Triangular Prism

Rectangular Prism.

Cylinder Volume and Volume Problems

7.3 question

v= π . r^2 . h
v= (3.14 x 5 x 5)x23cm
v=78.5 x 23cm
v=
1805.5 cm^3

7.4 question

a) Yes, he has enough small triangular Prisms to make a giant prism with a base of 5.6m and height of 6.8m.
b) v=b.h^1/2.h^2
v=(5.6x1.18)x6.8 m
v= 10.08 x 6.8 m
v= 69 m^3
The Volume of the new prism is 69m^3

Final Percent post

1. Percent;
In this unit we learned a lot about percent. Percent means it is out of a hundred, it can also be converted to fractions and decimals. We also learned how to combine percents. And we were taught how to convert percents to decimals and fractions.
Representing Percents;
-you can also represent percent in a hundred grid.
-1 whole grid is represented as 100% and 3/4 is 75%
e.g

---
Converting percents to a decimal and fraction;
-percent is out of a hundred
-decimals out of one
e.g

----
Percent of a number;
- change the percent to a decimal
e.g

----

Combining Percents;
- combining percent is really helpful if you go shopping
eg. The SLR was on sale for $250.oo. Find out what what total cost of the SLR with 5% GST and 7%PST.

2. Here's the video I made about percents.

Anna G's Pay It Forward

Group Members: Anna Gomez, Jasmin Lacap and Angelique Marcial

Part 1 :
Pay it forward is doing something to other people without them doing something in return but to pay it forward to other people. This project started when we watched a movie called "Pay it Forward." This is about a kid named Trevor, his parents are separated, his mom is alcoholic and his dad left them. Mr. Simonet their social studies teacher gave them an assignment where they have to think of an idea to change the world and put it into action. Trevor chose to help a homeless person, his classmate from getting bullied and he tries to get his social studies teacher and his mom dating. He helped 3 people and ask them to do the same to 3 more people. One day a journalist found out that Trevor is doing a project about paying it forward, and they interviewed him. He shared how he feels about helping other people and how he can make a difference to other peoples life. It was kind of sad because Trevor died after getting stabbed by the bullies for helping his classmate.

Part 2:

Our group chose to help people shovel their sidewalk. We chose this activity because we though it would be fun and this is one way to make other people happy. We helped three strangers and one of them is Angelique's neighbour. We did our act of kindness yesterday December 18, 2010

Video of our Pay It Forward project

Part 3:

Our act of kindness went well. I was really happy that I helped other people without them doing something in return. They were really happy that we shoveled their sidewalks. Before we did our act of kindness we asked them first. We gave them Christmas Cards and candy canes that says pay it forward. One thing that made my day was when one of the house owner said that we cheered her up and she had a big smile on her face. One of them also said that she will be paying it forward. I was also happy that they appreciate the Christmas card we gave them.

Part 4:

Pay it forward is important because you're doing something nice to other people, you're helping them and you're trying to make a difference on their lives. Instead of putting yourself first before others. I am really happy that as a kid I can change the world or change other peoples life. I think we did an awesome job shoveling. I hope in the future, kids like us will do the same thing and will be paying it forward.

No one is too young to make a difference to other peoples life. Even a little thing can change their world and make them happy.

Remember to "PAY IT FORWARD"

Happy Holidays guys!

Anna's Pythagoras Scribe post

5) A right triangle has a side lengths of 40 mm, 75mm and 85 mm.
a. Sketch the triangle. Draw a square on each side of the triangle.

b. What are the areas of three squares?

c. Write and addition statement with the areas of three squares .

10.) A triangle has side lengths of 120 mm, 160 mm, and 220 mm. Is the triangle a right triangle? Eplain your reasoning.

Correction: for c2 its suppose to be 40,000.

Yes it is a right triangle. I used this formula
(a2+b2=c2)

15)Consruction workers have begun to dig a hole for swimming pool. They want to check that the angle they have dug is 90 degrees. They measure they diagonal as shown to be 9.5 m. Explain your reasonings.

No its not a right angle because in my calculation the hypotenous should be 10 to be a right angle.

My proof.

19.) A right triangle has a square attached to each side. Two of the squares have areas of 10 cm2 and 15 cm2. What are possible areas for the third square? Draw a sketch for each solution.

The possible areas for the third square is

5 cm and 25 cm.

How I got the anwer: a2+b2=c2 for 25 cm
and c2-b2=a2 for 5 cm.

Here are some math games.

Anna's Sesame Street Video Post

My Group Members are Angelique and Jasmin

Ratio- it compares two quantities measured in the same units.
Example:

Red Shirts : Green Shirts

2 : 6

Rate- this compares two quantities measured in different units.

Example:
60km/h

Unit rate- its when the second term is one.

Example:
71beats/min

Proportion- this is a relationship that says that two rates and ratios are equal

Example:

____ ____ = _____

How much will 4 erasers cost if 2 erasers cost 25 cents.

4 erasers cost 50 cents

This Is the video that our group made.

Anna Gomez's Math Profile

First of all I am Anna Gomez and I am going to tell you about my math learnings. If someone asks me if I like math, I'd say yes. Math is my favourite subject from kindergarten to grade 6, but when I was in grade 7 I started hating math because it started to get hard for me. The best thing that i did an a math class was when we started learning about take aways or subtraction. My teacher would give us candies. She will give us 10 candies and she would let us eat 2, after we have to count how many candies were left.

When I was in grade 7 the best unit that I enjoyed most is fraction. I did well on this unit because my old school in the Philippines taught fractions when I was in grade 4. The unit that I found difficult is integers. To do well on integers, this year my goals are to ask questions and to listen to my teacher. This year, I will also focus on this unit.

I promise that this year I will do my best and study hard in everything I do. I will do what my teacher tell the class to do. Also, to learn our lessons I will do my homework everyday. I would take my time to understand and to do well on my tests. This year I would like to learn about computation of interest and calculus.

Last year when we did blog post I think "Term 3 Homework Package/Exam Study guide" was the best post I made. Blogging helped me become a better student because almost everything I need is on the blog and if I lost my notes that I need for the final exam I can just go to the blog and look at the notes that we need. This year I am looking forward to do a post about balancing equations or integers so I can learn or get to know this unit better.
