4.1 representing percent?
Fractions , decimals , and can be written as a percent.
EX 50%, 1/2 , 0.5.

4.3 Percent of a number?
Use mental math to find a percent of a number.
EX multiplying, dividing , doubling.
You can also find the percent of the number by converting the percent to a decimal and multiplying the number.

SamaraB, Pay it forward

Picture:1United Way,Picture 2 Handing out candy canes ,Picture 3 Donating to koats for kids.
I worked with Krizna N , Olivia T

Part 1

An 11 year old boy named Trevor has a troubled family, an alcoholic mother named Arlene, and his father left them. At Trevor's school he has a new teacher named Mr.Simonet. The teacher gives Trevor's class an assignment to think of a simple way to make the world a safer place. Trevor thinks of pay it forward, he does a favor for 3 people and ask them to do the same to other people. Trevor starts by helping a junkie named Jerry, then he tries to get Arlene and Mr.Simonet dating, and lastly he saves his classmate from bullies. One night a journalist that was stuck with no car, he got a car from a stranger asking him to do a favor for someone else, the journalist was surprised.

Part 2

My "pay it forward" act of kindness was to donate old jackets to Koats for kids of United Way at a Fire Department. Then we bought candy canes and gave them to little kids at he mall at Portage Place. We chose this because we felt bad for the kids on Christmas who don't have a warm jacket to play in the snow, and some kids don't get things on christmas so we wanted to give the kids candy canes. We did this today,Saturday ,December ,18,2010.

Part 3

I thought our act of kindness went pretty good because we did alot in just one day.Well,we did alot of walking in the cold and we took 6 buses back and forth to all the places.I felt really good about what I did today.I really feel good that I did just a little but in a big way. Most of the people react normally saying,"Thank You",and there was this one guy who was following us and asking us for a candy canes and he was about 16 yrs old , which was really weird. We asked everyone to pay it forward but none of them asked what it was.

Part 4

I think the idea."pay it forward " was important because we can help in just a little way but it can do so much for just one person.I thought my act of kindness made a difference because we donated jackets for kids who don't have any of them to play in the snow, and we gave candy to kids in the mall at Portage Place,I thought we did a good job.

Homework book

Homework book pages 42-43

1) Label each example with the mental math strategy it represents.:halving , doubling , dividing by ten. Then , complete the calculation

a) 1% of 66%
10% of 66% = $6.60
so, 1% of 66 = $0.66 dividing by 10

b) 5% of 180
10% of 180 = 18
So, 5% of 180 = 9 halving

c) 20% of $3.20
10% of $3.20 = $0.32
So, 20% of $3.20 = $0.64 doubling

2) Circle the terms that correctly complete this statement. To calculate the percent of the number, write the percent as a (decimal/percent), and then (divide/multiply by the number.

Answer: it would be divide then multiple.

3) Use the mental math to determine each of the following. show you thinking.
a) 200% or 4500
Answer :900 doubling
b) 0.1% or 600
Answer : 0.6
c) 1 1/4% of 80
Answer :1 halving
d) 30% of 70
Answer :21 divided by 10
e) 4/5% of 15
Answer :12 doubling by 10
f) 450% of 300
Answer :1350 doubling, halving

4) What is the percent of each number? Give you answer to the nearest hundredth.

a) 1/5% of 630
Answer:1.26
b) 23 7/8 of 300
Answer:71.63
c) 245% of $356
Answer:$874.16

Samara Bartos Math Profile

Hi my name is Samara Barto I'm a grade 8 math student. I someone asked me if i liked math i would say not really its really me "Do you like math?" I would say yes because math is part of my life and whe kinda hard when you get used to it .When i was younger I have really bad in math but my parents said i need more help in math so i can pass my grades . so i used to have y my mom or my teacher help me so now i'm kinda getting the hang of math but in some parts im not good. I learn it and that other people think its no use of learning it, it's actually a if part of life!

The unit that i really injoy and thought was easy was fractions because it was easy to understand I the work that i did about fraction was really simple because I just needed to be tought only once or more if i didn't get and after that all of it would be easy. The unit that i didn't do really good in was probably the translation but only the rotation one because it was really confusing for me and I would get frustrated because i didn't know how it would be like. My goal for this year is to pass the exams and move on to grade 9. But im really not that good at math i just need to try harder.

This year in grade 8, I will be more succusesfull by staying on task more and I would complete all my work and try to hand it on time and comment on all of the blogs when i have time t to make a blog this year . This year would like to learn how to do rotation so it won't be difficult for me to do. I also want to get more better in dividing cause i want to be more clear so when i go to grade 12 so it would be much easyer to do in school. I will try to make this not so difficiult this year.
