Angelique's 2 Minutes to Make a Difference - Reflection

Japan Disaster Relief
Group members: Jasmin Lacap, Anna Gomez, and Angelique Marcial

1.
Google Document

First Draft

Final Draft

2. Our first video to our final draft had a big difference. We found adding voice narrations would make the video improve more, and also the slowing down the slides. The comments from the first draft really helped us to fix our video, like slowing down the slides. The voice narrations made it easier for the person who is watching to read, because they can just follow along or just listen. The comments were great help for us.

3. We found our expert while we were looking for information online. We found a site called, "ABS-CBN Kapamilya helpine." We found Edna Lupa, who is responsible for gathering information and organizations who help Japan. When we called, it was early in the morning, so she just she would email. Three important key points she told us were:
1. North and South America received warnings and evacuations
2. At least 20 other countries recieved warnings
3. Caramines Sur and Norte, Philippines was affected by the earthquake also

4. My group and I was successful on finding an expert.

5. Our greatest success for our 2 Minutes project were the information and pictures we found.

6. The thing that frustrated me the most during the movie process was my voice narration. This is because when I was talking I wasn't so sure if I was going to fast, to slow, too loud, or too quiet. I tried to hear myself after the recording and picked the best one I should use.

7. The 2 Minutes project is important to Grade 8 students because we can show at any age we can do something and help our world. We can make differences in the world.

8. I will make a difference in the future by helping or donating what I can, or do what I can do to help without anything in return. I can tell people the information I know and what I learned during this experience.

Angelique's Great Big Book of Integers

Grade 7 Integer Review
Integers
-integer chips
-negative and positive numbers
-zero pair (+, -)

When something that isn't there, use a zero pair.

Questions:

-6 - (-4) = (-2)
-10 + 6 = (-4)
6-7+2=3
14 - (-3) = 17

-3-(-7)= +4

-3-7=4

3-7 = -4

3 + 7 = 10

-3+7=

Chapter 2 - Multiplying Integers
Sign Rules - Even: When you have an even number negative factors the product is positive.
Odd: When you have an odd number of negative factors the product is negative.

(+2) x (+3) =
(2) x (3) =
(2)(3)=6 : standard form
2 (3) = 6

(+2) x (+3) = 2 groups of (+3) = 6

(+2) x (-3)
(-2) x (+3) = Remove 2 Groups of (+3)

(-2) x (-3)

Chapter 3 - Dividing Integers

What is Partitive Division?
Partitive Division is when you know the total numbers of groups, and you are trying to find the number of items in the groups.
6÷2=3
-6÷(-2)=3

What is Quotative Division?
Quotative Division is the number in each group, but you don't know the number of groups there are.
(-6)÷2=

You can find the answer to a question using multiplicated inverse.
In a division question with an amount or no (-) sign the quotient will be postitive.
If there is and odd number of negative signs the quotient will be negative.

Winnipeg Harvest Visit - Make Manitoba Hunger Free 873

I was one of the people who got to go to Winnipeg Harvest a few weeks ago. I will talk about Winnipeg Harvest and you can learn more at http://www.winnipegharvest.com/ .

What did you learn about Winnipeg Harvest?

I learned that Winnipeg Harvest helps many people. It makes a big difference in Winnipeg and some parts of Manitoba. About 56,000 people go to Winnipeg Harvest every month and half of them are people under the age of 18. People across Winnipeg come to Winnipeg Harvest and pick up food, or if not they get delivered. Many people volunteer at Winnipeg Harvest just to help pack food into bags, sort food, and many other things. We have such a great community! Winnipeg Harvest doesn't just have food, they also have medical products, dog/cat food, and hygiene products. Winnipeg Harvest works with other agencies and 80 child care agencies, they send food there also. If Harvest stopped receiving food, they would be out of food in a week!

Who does Winnipeg Harvest help?

Basically Winnipeg Harvest helps people who need food. People come to get food or get there food delivered. Winnipeg Harvest works with other agencies and 80 child care agencies, they send food there also. Winnipeg Harvest gives out 1000 basic nutrition kits every day and about 5500 a week. When I was at Winnipeg Harvest to help, this is what we did. Make nutrition kits, which includes four things, protein, fruit/vegetables, carbohydrates, and soup. These are all in cans.

Where does Winnipeg Harvest get the food it supplies to its users?

Winnipeg Harvest gets their food supplies from many areas throughout the city. In many stores, there are baskets or boxes located somewhere. There you can put in perishable food, and when this is full they send it to Winnipeg Harvest to donate. Some of these stores include Safeway, Superstores, and Sobeys. Winnipeg Harvest have many connections that donate to them. For example, Superstore might have extra food that they don't want to sell anymore or for any other reason. Another company is Co-op! Yes, the gas station. They have food there too, not many people buy there so if there is lots of extras or any other reason it is sent off to donate to Winnipeg Harvest.

What are the top 10 items needed in Winnipeg Harvest?

1. Canned Fish and Poultry
2. Canned Fruit and Vegetables
3. Canned Stew, Chili, Brown Beans
4. Peanut Butter (Light)
5. Baby Food
6. Whole Grain Pasta/Whole Wheat Pasta
7. Rice
8. Canned Spaghetti Sauce or Tomatoes
9. Cereal
10. Canned Soup

When you volunteered what do you remember about your job?

When I volunteered what I remember doing about my job was that we were in at our own area, in order there was a box of plastic bags, box of carbohydrates (eg. oatmeal, pasta), box of protein (eg. canned stew), box of fruits and vegetables (eg. cans of fruits/vegetables), and box of soup (canned). Then you held your bag and walked and took one of each so you had four in your bag. You then tie it, then we hand it over to a bigger bag which then can have only seven of those small kits. That big bag gets closed and then goes on the side. You go back to the end of the line and this process goes on and on! It seems boring, but for me it was actually really fun! I had a great time, it was a wonderful opportunity to go to Winnipeg Harvest and I'm very grateful. (:

Mr. Potter took picture of us, but it is not uploaded.

Final Percent Video

Percent - This is a number out of 100. It can be converted into decimals and fractions. We learned how to convert percents into fractions and decimals.

Representing Percents

-One whole hundred grid, that is full shaded is 100%
-If half of the grid is shaded that means its 50% or 1/2 or 0.5

EG.

Fractions, Decimals Percents

-Percents can be written as decimals, and fractions.

Percent of a Number
-Change the percent to a decimal

Combining Percents

-Shopping is a great example of using combing percents.
-Here, I used a pair of $60.00 shoes as an example, and a 5% PST and a 6% GST.

The total cost of $67.20.

This is my video I made about percents.

Here is a link to my percent post.

Here is another link to a site where you can learn more about percents.

If you have any questions or anything else, please tell me so I can improve. Thank you! (;

Angelique's Pay it Forward

Group members: Anna Rodessa Gomez & Jasmin Lacap

Part 1

Pay it forward is a way of helping people or doing an act of kindess, but there is no pay back or gift. Instead, they pay it forward to someone else then this goes on, like a chain reaction. This all came from a movie actually called, "Pay it Forward." This movie is like the same thing. There was a student named Trevor that had an assignment to do a random act of kindness to three people and then each of them pass it to another three which makes nine, then this continues to twelve. Unfortunately, Trevor dies because he saved his friend from teens that were beating him up. The bullies used a knife to kill Trevor.

Part 2

My pay it forward act of kindness was to shovel snow in front of peoples houses.
We chose to do this because we thought it would be fun and a great way to be kind.
We did our act of kindness for three people. Two strangers, and my neighbor.
We did the same things for the three houses, we shoveled their front yard and sidewalks around the houses. We did our act of kindness on Saturday, December 18th, 2010.

This is a video on what we did.

Part 3

Our act of kindness went very well. None of the people backed down. I felt very warmed and nice because you don't really do this everyday for different people and strangers. They were very thankful that we were there to clean their yard. Before we cleaned their yard we asked permission and gave them a card. Which had a candy cane with it that said, "Pay it Forward." One person replied, "I guess i'm going to have to pay it forward," with a smile on her face. The other two just smiled and nodded their heads yes. We all felt very thankful that they appreciated on what we had done for them.

Part 4

The idea of "Pay it Forward" is important because it makes the world more peaceful and beautiful. Makes world a better place for us human beings. This can change many peoples; lives. It shows that we care for people and our community. I think our act of kindness made a difference. We helped people that may not have the time to do it on their own or they cannot do it because of any injuries. I'm glad to do this anytime again in the future.

Please remember to pay it forward everyone! (:
And Have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!

Angelique's Sesame Street Video Post

Group Members; Jasmin and Anna

Ratio - Compares two quantities measured in the same units.

Example: If you have ten cans on a shelf and a lady takes away 4 from the shelf you get six on the shelf, the ratio of the cans that are still on the shelf and the cans with the lady is,
The part that says "Shelf:Lady" that is what you call a word ratio.

Rate - Compares two quantites measured in different units.
Unit Rate - A rate in which the second term is one.
Unit Price - A unit rate used when shopping.

Example: If you have 10 cans/$12.00 and you want to know how much four cans cost, you can use "unit rate." This is how you can do it.

Proportion - A relationship that says that two ratios or two rates are equal.

Proportion Statement; ____ _____ = _____

Example: If eight pencils cost $1.50, how much will 24 pencils cost?

This is a way to do it.

My group and I made a remake video of Sesame Street's video called, "Supermarket Countdown.''
This is our remake video of Supermarket Countdown.
Presenting, "The Ratio & Rate Supermarket"
ENJOY! (:

Angelique's Math Profile

Hello, my name is Angelique Marcial. I'm a math student in grade eight. If someone asked me if I liked math I would say, not really. My answer was not really because I'm not strong with math and I'm not really into numbers and sometimes I get mixed up. The best thing I ever did in math class was doing the blog. I LOVED doing that because it's fun, you can do it yourself, in your own way. I also liked it because you didn't have to do much work just type and look for other things, you can also help you peers with math stuff.

In grade seven I really liked Integers. I found it the best, I found it really easy to do. I found the integer chips easier than number lines. I found number lines really confusing, but integer chips made my work more fun to do and faster. Last year in grade seven, I remember I had LOTS of trouble with rotation and transformation and the others. Then, finding the new coordinates. I didn't really get it, it was because I was in the Philippines at the time when they were talking about it. I didn't get to ask. I will listen more about it in class if we ever get to talk about it and learn about it. So I wouldn't struggle this year I will listen very carefully and write down extra notes that I might need.

Now I am in grade eight, to be a successful math student I will write down extra notes in case it might be in the exam, finish all my homework and be more organized with my work. I will always review what I have learned on that day so I can remember, and do good on a test or quiz. Before any quiz or test though I will study very hard for it so I can get perfect on the test. This year in grade eight I want to learn more about linear equations. I want to because last year in grade seven I found that fun also. I found it fun to solve linear equations than any other math problem.

I was a blogger last year. I had lots of fun blogging and commenting on other peoples blogs. One of my favourite blogs that I made was one about solving equations. This was my favourite because it had everything, color, an image, video and a link. There were also lots of great comments and remember I said earlier that I liked solving equations? See, its true! Blogging made me a better student because thats what helps me review. I ALWAYS go on the internet after school so might as well look at the blog to see what we did today instead of just going to my binder and reading it, like it seems so boring. When I look at the blog it seems more colorful and I can learn more from the video and the link. This year in math class I'm really looking forward to the math movies we are going to make that Mr. Harbeck was talking about! I think I'll have a fun math year! (:
