Colleen's 2 minutes to make a difference reflection

Reflection:
The changes we made to the first draft, is that we corrected the spelling and grammar mistakes. We also added more pictures, and put where we donated the money to. The students comments was helpful to making our video better.

3. We found our expert through the internet. Our expert is from the MCIC (Manitoba Council for International Cooperation). We e-mailed Rebecca Irving, and asked a few questions, then we asked if we could have an interview. She kindly said yes. She defined what child labour means, and how we could help prevent it. Rebecca also talked about the effects of child labour. I learned a lot from Rebecca. I learned that the government is denying that child labour is happening in their country. Even if they have evidence, they will say that is not I'm my country.

5. I think our greatest success was finding a expert in Winnipeg, and being able to interview them and learning a lot from that interview.

6. The thing that frustrated me during this process is finding pictures. There wasn't a lot of varieties of pictures, and the ones I really liked were not creative commons. I tried searching up different key words, and by doing that i found more pictures. Another thing that frustrated me is finding music.

7. 2 minutes to make a difference is important to grade 8 student because we should know what is going on in the world. So we can change this in the future. It also teaches us from what to do and what not to do.

8. In the future i will make a difference by being concerned with the bad things happening around the world, and trying to prevent it or help in any way i can. I will donate money, clothes, and food. I will try to raise awareness on that situation.

Colleen's Algerba Post

Algebra- Writing mathematical phrases using letters to represent numbers
variable- a letter that represents a number in an equation or expression
constant- the constant is the integer in algebra
expression- a pattern. many possible answers. eg. 2x
equation- only one possible answer. eg. 2x=6

Steps:
1. Isolate the variable
2. Cancel the constant using zero pairs
3. Balance (what you do to one side you do to the other)
4. Verify

Colleen's Great Book Of Integers

Integers
-number lines
-integer chips (red=positive blue=negative)
-zero pair
-negative and positive numbers
**When subtracting something that isn't there use a zero pair.

-3-(-7)

-3 -7

-3+7

Chapter 2
Multiplying Integers

(-2)x(-3)= 6
remove 2 groups of negative 3

(-2)x(+3)= -6

(+2) x (-3)= -6
2 groups of negative 3

(+2) x (+3)=6

*Sign Rule (negative sign)*

Even= when you have an even number of Negative factors product is POSITIVE
Odd= When you have and Odd number of negative factors the product is NEGATIVE

Chapter 3 Dividing Integers

Partitive division is how many groups of a number are in a given value.

example:

6÷2=3

-6÷ (-2)= 3

Quotative Division is sharing a certain number between a given value.

Example of sign rule.

6/2= 3
no (-) signs which means its a positive
-6/(-2)= 3
2 (-) signs which means its a positive
(-6)÷2= -3
1 (-) sign which means its a negative
6÷(-2)= -3
1 (-) sign which means its a negative.

Chapter 4
Order of Operations with Integers

Order of operation

(+5) x (-3) + (-6) ÷ (+3)=

[(+5) x (-3)]= -15

(-15) + (-6)
÷ (+3)

[(-6)
÷ (+3)]= -2

(-15) + (-2) = -17

Final Percent Post

This chapter is about percents, fractions, and decimals.
Percent means: out of 100. Another name for percent is hundredths.

Representing Percents:
You can represent a percent using a hundred grid.
One fully colored grid shows 100%
For example is 20 squares are colored it represents 20%

Fractions, Decimals, and Percents:
Percents can be represented as a fraction or a decimal.
For example:

Percent of a number:
You can use mental math
strategies like halving, doubling, and dividing by 10.
For example: 50% of 200 is 100.

Combining Percents:
You can combine percents by adding them together to solve a problem.
For example: The cost of a shirt is 7.99. What is the total cost of the shirt including 5% GST and 7% PST.
5%+7%=12%
100%(the cost of the shirt) +12%= 112%
112% as a decimal is 1.12
7.99 x 1.12 = 8.9488
= $8.95.

Colleen's Scribe Post

I did questions 8, 9, and 12.

8) The original price of a jacket was $84.00. A store manager marked the pric
e down by 25.5%. By how much was the price reduced?

9) The highest point in Canada is Mount Logan, which is 159% as high as the highest point in Alberta, Mount Columbia is 3747 m. What is the elevation of Mount Logan?

12) A manufacturer of electric hybrid vehicles claims its vehicle will travel 200% as far as its regular vehicle on a full tank of gas. If the regular vehicle travels an average of 550 km on a full tank, how far will the hybrid go?

Colleen's Pay It Forward

Part 1
The movie "Pay It Forward" is about a young boy named Trevor. His social studies teacher assigned a project to find a way to change the world. Trevor comes up with "Pay It Forward." He does 3 good deeds and he expects the people he helped to do the same and pay it forward. His first good deed is to help a homeless man name Jerry. Trevor's second good deed is to try to get his mom and his social studies teacher together. He thinks his plan to "pay it forward" didn't work, until a reporter interviews him about his idea. H
is last good deed is to help a boy that is getting bullied.

Part 2

For my act of kindness me, Breanna, Maya, Ana, and Hazel went to polo park to donate toys and hand out candy. We chose this activity because we thought it is a great way to make someone happy when they weren't expecting it. We donated toys because we know not every family could afford toys. We helped kids that don't have enough money for toys. First we went out and bought toys and candy. Then we handed out the candy and donated the toys. We went some stores and asked if they wanted one. We did our act of kindness on Friday December 17, 2010.

Part 3
I think our act of kindness went better than i thought. When we got there we donated the toys first. we went to the middle of polo park where there was a giant pile of toys. 102.3 Clear FM was there also, so we told them we are from Sargent Park School and they said they will try to mention us on the radio. After donating the toys we went to give the candy out. I felt scared, happy and excited at the same time. Some people were surprised and happy and some people were kind and said "no thanks." After offering candy we said "pay it forward." Some people didn't ask us what it means to pay it forward, and the others told us what they are going to do to pay it forward.

Part 4
The idea of "Pay it Forward" is important because people need to know that even the little
st thing could mean a lot to another person. I think my act of kindness has made a difference.

Don't forget to Pay It Forward!

Colleen's Math Profile

Hi, my name is Colleen. I'm a grade 8 math student. If someone asked me if i like math, i would say yes. Math is one of my favorite subjects. The best thing i have done in math class would be learning how to add and subtract, because i remember when i first started to learn how to add and subtract, our class would have a game and whoever answered the question first would get a prize.

The best unit i studied last year would have to be the probability unit. I think i did well in this unit because when we first stared to learn it, i didn't know what probability was. That being said it made me want to learn what probability is and it made me want to do well in that unit. The unit i struggled in the most is algebra. This year I'm going to ask more questions about algebra and pay more attention when the teacher teaches us the process.

To become a better math student, i will pay more attention to the instructions, write more notes, ask questions, read over my notes everyday, and study more harder
. This year i would like to learn more about algebra.

My favorite post i did last year would have to be the one on "Subtracting Fractions." Blogging helped me become a better student by reminding me what we did in class that day. This year I want to do a lot more blogs than i did last year.
