Christian A's Algebra Post

What is Algebra?
Algebra is writing mathematical phrases using letters to show numbers.

Variable - A letter that represents a number in an algebraic equation and expression
Constant - The integers involved in a expression or equation
Expression - A pattern with more than one answer
Equation - A pattern with one possible answer

How to solve a "One Step" equation:

1. Isolate the variable
2. Make a zero pair with the constant
3. Balance the equation
4. Verify!

Algebra tiles:

How to solve a "Two Step" equation:

1. Isolate the variable
2. Cancel the constant
3. Balance
4. Simplify the variable
5. Verify

Christian's Term 2 Reflection

Listen!

* If you can't hear my voice very well, I wrote my reflection down here. Sorry, my mic on my laptop was far away from my mouth and I kept messing up trying to record it again.

Term 2 Reflection

In term 2 I think I did well on volume and surface area. I think I did well on my tests because I remembered the formulas. It was easy to understand.

I struggled with some of the formulas for finding volume. I didn't like finding the volume for cylinders at all. It sucked. I didn't really understand percents.

Next term I will listen more in class and focus on my work more. I will also try to be involved with class discussion to help my learning.

I learned how to convert decimals to fractions. I learned how to calculate taxes by a ratio table. I learned how to calculate the formula for 3D shapes like rectangle or a right triangle. I learned how to find the volume of them too.

Surface area is the amount of units outside of the 3D shape, and volume is the is the amout of units inside the shape.

Christian's Big Book of Integers

Chapter 1 Grade7 Integer Review
When something isn't there, make a zero pair.
1.) -3 - (-7) = 4

I made 7 zero pairs because I didn't have -7. So then I took away -7 and had 3 zero pairs.
Answer: +4
2.) -3 - 7 = -10

I made 7 zero pairs and took away 7.
Answer: -10

3.) 3 - 7 = -4

I drew -7 and +3. I had 3 zero pairs.
Answer: -4

4.) 3 + 7 = 10

I drew 3 then 7 more.
Answer: 10

5.) -3 + 7

I drew -3 and 7. I had 3 zero pairs.
Answer: 4

Chapter 2 Multiplying Integers

1.) (+2) x (+3) = 6

+++ +++ two groups of three.

2.) (+2) x (-3) = -6

--- --- two groups of negative three

3.) (-2) x (+3) = -6

+++ +++ -----> - - - - - - remove two groups of positive three

4.) (-2) x (-3) = 6

+++ +++ --- --- remove two groups of negative three

The Sign Rule for Multiplication

When theres an even amout of negative signs, the product will be positive.

When theres an odd amout of negative signs, the product will be negative.

Chapter 3 Dividing Integers

There are different ways to divide integers.

Partitive Division - When you use a numberline to divide integers.
Quotative Division - Share a number between an amout of groups.

Multiplication Inverse - When you rewrite a division question to a multiplication question. It helps when you can't find a way to use partitive or quotative division.

The Sign Rule for Division

The sign rule for division is almost the same as multiplication. The amout of negative sign rules is the same.

Chapter 4

(+6) x (-2) + (-6) / (+2) = ?

Do the multiplication first. Ex. [ +6 x (-2) = -12 ]

Then division -6 / (+2) = -3

Answer: -15

Christian's HWB Post

Pages: 78-79

Questions: 5, 8 and 9

5. What is the volume of a right prism that has a base with an area of 15cm2 and a height of 7cm?

V = 15cm2 x 7cm

V = 105cm3

7. Calculate the height of each rectangluar prism.

a) 63cm3 ÷ 9cm2 = 7cm

b) 26m3 ÷ 4m2 = 6.5m

9. Chad wants to cut back on the amount of treats he is eating. He has two chocolate bars to choose from. Which one has less chocolate? Show your thinking.

The first bar was:
V = 26cm2 x 2cm
V = 52cm3

The second bar was:
V = 5.25cm2 x 14.5cm
V = 76.125cm3

The first chocolate bar has less chocolate.

Cylinder Volume and Volume Problems

7.3

a) V = pi.r.r.h
V = 3x2x2x10
V = 120m^3

b) V = pi.r.r.h
V= (3.14x2 x2) x 10.5
V = 131.88m^3

7.4

d/2 = r
8 / 2 = r
4cm = r

V = pi.r.r.h
V = (3.14x4x4)x40
V= 2009.6cm^3

The capacity of the pipe is 2009.6cm^3

Christian's Final Percent Post

1. The front wheel of a tricycle is 155% as large as its rear wheels. Use hundred grids to show how the front wheel compares to the rear wheels.

2. The cost of a downloaded game is 10.99. Added to this cost was a 10% before tax processing fee, 5%GST and 7%PST. What is the total cost of the game?

3. The number of caribou in a particular herd was monitored over a two-year period. The first year, the size of the herd was estimated at 30 000. The second year, the heard was estimated to be to be 90% of its original size. What was the approximate size of the herd in the second year?

4. What is a better deal:
a) 60% off a pair of shoes
b) 20% off a pair of shoes then a 40% reduction off the discounted price.
Use an example to show your thinking.

*The questions in the video aren't in order to the blog. Sorry.

Christian Andulan's Pay it Forward

Pay it Foward is a random act of kindness, and not expecting the person to do anything in return. What happens is the person can decide whether to pass on the act of kindness or not to.

My pay it forward act of kindness was to donate my old clothes. I chose this activity because I know that I shouldn't be the only one that has clothes to wear to cover my body. I guess that I helped the kids who are less fortunate. Arun and I gathered up clothes that aren't using and we dropped it off at a local Donation Centre. We did our act of kindness today, 19-Dec-2010.

My act of kindness went well, we had to drop off our donation and somebody would pick it up and the end of the day. I felt great about putting my old clothes to a use, even if it wasn't me using them. There was no one for us to ask to pay it foward.

The idea of paying it forward is important because people need to see past thinking about themselves, and should think about others just as equally. My act of kindness has made a difference.

Part 1:

Two Term Ratio - a two term ratio compares two quantities that are measured in the same unit.
Example: 3:4 or 3 to 4.

Three Term Ratio - a three term ratio compares three quantities that are measured in the same units
Example: 3:4:5 or 3 to 4 to 5

Rate - a rate compares two quantities measured in different units.
Like $0.20 / apple or $10.00/g ( like when your shopping )

Unit Rate - a rate in which the 2nd term is one.
For example 15ms / second or 100ms / min

Unit Price - a rate used when shopping
Examples: per 100gs, per 50mls

Proportional Reasoning (P.R) - a relationship that says two ratios or two rates are equal.
For example: 2/3 = 4/6

Part 2:
The video we based ours on was:

Christian Andulan's Math Profile

Math Profile

Hi, my name is Christian. I am a math student in grade 8. If someone asked me "Do you like math?" I would tell them no, I don't like math. I don't like math because it makes my brain hurt, and its NOT my strongest subject at all! The best thing I have ever done in a math class blog. I liked blogging before, because I thought it was fun, and something that I could do to use up my free time!

In grade 7, the best unit I studied was Fractions, because I really like fractions. I remember talking about thirds and quarters, and turning fractions into percents. This unit made me struggle because of Equivalent Fractions, because some fractions are really big like 85/255, but is actually equivalent to one third. That is what really grinds my gears. This year I will try to listen to everything in class, and study more often.

This year is grade 8. I will try to complete my homework so that we can move on to other lessons, so my fellow peers can also learn new things, as well as I can. I will also try to complete blogs so that my friends can view lessons that they missed. I am looking forward to learning more algebra and becoming as good as Mr. Harbeck in math by the end of the year.

Last year I did blog, a favourite post of mine was an Exam Review to help get other students ready for the exam. I'm proud of this post because I had a video, pictures, and I made the blog well understandable. Blogging helped me become a better student because it helped me remember what I learned that day. This year I hope to do MORE blogs than last year.
