Marysa's Algebra Post

Chapter 1:

Solving "1 Step" Equations:

My Question will be x+9=14
Step one: Isolate the Variable

To do this you have to get rid of the constant using a zero pair.
EXAMPLE:

x+9-9=14

Step 2: Once you have done that you must do the same to the answer to keep them even.
EXAMPLE:

x=14-9

Step 3: Then you have to Verify or check your answer by plugging that number into the question.
EXAMPLE:

x=5

x+9=14
5+9=14
14=14

Now I will solve it using algebra tiles:

Let x equal green always
Let 1 be red always
Let -1 be white always

Solving "2 Step" Algebra Equations:

My question will be 3x+4=19

Step one: Isolate the Variable

To do this you have to get rid of the constant using a zero pair.
EXAMPLE:

3x+4-4=19

Step 2: Once you have done that you must do the same to the answer to keep them even.
EXAMPLE:

3x=19-4

Step 3: Simplify the Variable
EXAMPLE:

3x=15

3x/3=15/3

x=5

Step 4: Then you have to Verify or check your answer by plugging that number into the question.
EXAMPLE:

3x+4=19
3(5)+4=19
15+4=19
19=19

Now I will solve it using algebra tiles:

Let x equal green always
Let 1 be red always
Let -1 be white always
